An Awesome DIY Magnetic Chalkboard for Your Home

An Awesome DIY Magnetic Chalkboard for Your Home

Last year we moved into our new home and I instantly started thinking of ways I wanted to use/decorate our house. The formal dining room became our playroom for the kids (because who really uses a formal dining room anyway?) and I started looking for inspiration. That’s when I came across the idea of putting a magnetic chalkboard on the wall! There are multiple ways you can go about doing this. I chose the following method for creating our DIY magnetic chalkboard.

An Awesome DIY Magnetic Chalkboard for Your Home

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • One 2’ x 2’ x .25” piece of Birch Plywood (You can also use Masonite board but we found this wood pre-cut and ready to use)
  • Four 2.25” x 7’ primed composite window casing (cut at 45 degree angles and measuring 26”)
  • Galvanized sheet metal (this one measures 24” x 24”)
  • Construction adhesive (we used liquid nails adhesive with a caulk gun)
  • Chalkboard paint
  • Sheet metal screws OR picture hanging D rings
  • Staple Gun (optional)
  • Drill

  1. Cut a total of four pieces of window casing at 45-degree angles. Be sure to double check that your angles are correct so that your boards will fit together to form your frame. Set aside.
  2. Apply a generous amount of construction adhesive to your plywood.
  3. Place your sheet metal on top of adhesive and weigh it down. We used these clamps to hold ours in place. Allow this to dry for a couple hours.
  4. Once your sheet metal is secured to your plywood, paint the sheet metal with your chalkboard paint. I went the spray can route but you can also paint on your chalkboard paint with a roller. I recommend applying two coats total. Allow the paint to completely dry in between coats.
  5. This step is optional. Place your window casing together (upside down) and secure all four corners with a staple gun. We did this step so that our finished product would be sturdy enough to handle children using it on a daily basis.
  6. After your chalkboard paint has set for 24 hours, “season” it with a piece of white chalk. You can do this by taking the side of a piece of white chalk and running it over the entire surface of the chalkboard. Wipe off any chalk with a rag.
  7. Glue your frame to your chalkboard. Allow it to dry for a couple hours.
  8. The last step will vary with each project. If you have children using your magnetic chalkboard like we do, we recommend screwing it into the wall.
  9. OPTION A: Screw four sheet metal screws into each corner of your chalkboard. If you can find a stud, you can screw directly into the stud. If you can’t find a stud, you might want to use an anchor like this one.
  10. OPTION B: Screw two D hooks in the back to hang (not pictured).

Remember, this is YOUR project! Make it your own by painting your frame a nice color or turn it into a command center for your family. Enjoy!
